Bellydance
Bellydance’, ‘Raqs Sharqi’, ‘Oriental dance’, ‘Dance of the East’, all refer to a style of dance developed in the Middle East. Bellydance is the western name for this dance and contrary to popular belief, it is not a "dance of seduction". It is an ancient dance, which was practiced socially. The exact origins of bellydance movements are unknown, but there are many theories. Some of these theories are:
• It was a traditional birthing practice. It was used to strengthen and tone
the abdominal and pelvic floor
muscles to prepare women for childbirth.
• It was bought to Egypt by Indian gypsies (the Ghawazee).
• It was a religious dance practiced by the Temple Priestesses.
Despite its name bellydance uses the whole body, and muscle isolations are an integral part of the dance (the ability to move various muscles or muscle groups independently). There is an emphasis on the movement of hips and spine, and movements are more inner directed than Western forms of dance.
Bellydancing is a good low impact cardio-vascular workout. It helps to tone and strengthen the body, and increase flexibility. The movements of bellydance are ideally suited to the female form, and naturally aid in preparing a woman for childbirth. It can be a tool for empowerment and can address issues with self-esteem and body image.
Bellydancing is a captivating and expressive dance suitable for all levels, ages and body types. It can help tone the body and improve body confidence. Have fun, get fit, and more…..
