Frequently Asked Questions
What do you mean by A-Z?
Q.
A.
A to Z is a series of 26 routines created by Keti Sharif. The Routines have been developed from Keti’s experience as an international dancer, troupe performer and aerobics instructor. The routines are designed to teach Oriental Dance techniques and combinations, ranging in level from basic to advanced. What is the difference between a course and a drop in class?
Courses are run through Hillingdon Adult Education in 10-week blocks. They need to be pre-booked by contacting Hillingdon (see classes page). There are specific aims and learning outcomes for each course, which need to be monitored and assessed.
There are specific themes for drop in classes, but they are less structured and more flexible. As the lessons can be adjusted to suit those who attend.
What is the format of the class?
The class starts with a warm up, then drilling of individual techniques and combining them into routines. During the class I will watch your movements and offer guidance on how to improve. The class finishes with a cool down.
What is the level of the class?
The classes are mixed level and students do will be given techniques according to their abilities.
What should I bring to class?
A bottle of water.
What should I wear to class?
Anything you like, but preferably not jeans. Your clothes should be comfortable and allow you to move freely. The more fitted the better as it helps me to see your movements more clearly. Hip scarves are optional (some are available to borrow), but they do help to emphasize your movements. Bellydancing is practised in bare feet or you can wear ballet/dance type shoes.
Do I have to show my stomach?
Not if you don’t want to, it is totally up to you.
Can anyone do bellydancing?
Yes! Bellydancers come in all shapes, sizes and ages.
Are there any health benefits?
Yes! Bellydancing is a good low impact cardio-vascular workout. It helps to tone and strengthen the body, and increase flexibility. The movements of bellydance are ideally suited to the female form, and naturally aid in preparing a woman for childbirth. It can be a tool for empowerment and can address issues with self-esteem and body image.
