Biography
Shakira is a certified FRYOG teacher (FriendsofYoga) and is required to attend in-house training every year to keep her skills up to date. Shakira has completed a foundation course in Yoga therapy, and is currently studying for a Yoga Therapy Diploma with the Yoga Biomedical Trust.
She currently teaches twice a week (one class if for staff only at a school) and tailors them to meet the needs of all her students.
Shakira is a caring, patient teacher and some of the aims of her yoga class are to:
Bring some stillness and peace to today’s hectic lifestyles. In this technological era, people are constantly being bombarded by stimuli. They never get a chance to relax properly and recharge their batteries. So the mind and body are never fully rested, causing fatigue and imbalances. Proper relaxation is needed, where there is no motor neuron activity, and mind and body are at complete rest.
Teach people to work within their limits, and not to force any of the postures or any of the techniques. To encourage people to be more non-judgmental and not to compare themselves to other people. Yoga is not a competition, and everyone should do what is right for them at that time.
Teach people how to breathe correctly and fully. Most people are reverse breathers and only use about a third of their lung power. Breathing effects the mind, it can make a person excited or calm, or tense or relaxed. The breath and mind are tied together, and by regulating and observing the breath, the constant chatter in the mind can be calmed.
Continuously learn myself. So that I may deepen my practice and understanding of yoga, and use this to raise my level of consciousness. To develop an awareness of the effects of yoga on the mind body and spirit. So that I have the ability to tailor my classes to meet the individual needs of the student, and am able to give good advice to anyone who may need it.
